HANDPICKED CITY FARM

Over the last 50 years Kenilworth Centre has grown into one of Cape Town’s most iconic community shopping centres serving the needs of our community since 1975.

Rooted in the community and with a finger on the pulse, we realized that there is a need in the community for among other food security, education/skills development and job creation.

OUR FARMING JOURNEY  

Through our marketing initiatives focusing on the local community including NGOs and schools we established a more permanent solution to address the community challenges and need for food security, education/skills development and job creation.

We joined forces with strong and knowledgeable partners who share our vision to create and install a farm on our roof.

This vision became a reality through a strategic partnership with 2 key role players:

• The Mr Price Foundation
• FreshLife Produce

Together we have created an urban rooftop farm on top of Kenilworth Centre using the African Grower Hydroponic Vertical Growing system. This farming system was cleverly designed to operate on low/minimum electricity and water consumption.

During November 2022 we successfully installed the Handpicked City Farm Kenilworth Centre.

We are able to showcase how the urban rooftop farm positively impacts communities and builds relations that ultimately lead to food security, skills development and job creation.
